Federer sets the record straight

2012-02-14 09:00:30

Roger Federer set the record straight on Monday after reports claimed he blamed team-mate Stanislas Wawrinka for Switzerland’s Davis Cup loss to the United States.

World No 3 Federer lost both his singles games and his doubles rubber with Wawrinka as the United States thrashed the European country 5-0 in the first round.

To add insult to injury, Federer was accused of criticising Wawrinka after their doubles loss, but the 30-year-old says his French remarks were mistranslated into English.

The media reported that the multiple Grand Slam winner stated Wawrinka played “bad” during their loss, but Federer says he said “not bad”.

“It was a tough weekend for us,” he is quoted as saying by The Associated Press.

“I did have a day to sort of recover on Sunday and just weather the press because it was taken completely the wrong way, me blaming Stan. I would never do that and it was just an unfortunate weekend.

“There were many different circumstances leading to our defeat. First and foremost, I think the Americans played really well.”

Federer, though, is determined to bounce back from the Davis Cup disappointment and has set his sights on the World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam.

“I’ll move on quickly from here,” Federer said, “because I had good conversations with the captain (Severin Luthi), with Stan himself obviously, and just making sure there’s no misunderstandings.”
