Federer secures another Rotterdam title

2012-02-20 08:21:29

World No 3 Roger Federer routed Juan Martin del Potro in straight sets to secure his first title of the year at the World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam.

The 30-year-old dropped only five games en route to an easy 6-1 6-4 victory in an hour and 26 minutes.

After breaking Del Potro twice in the opening set, Federer was forced to move up a couple of gears in the second set after finding himself 2-1 down. The Swiss player, though, won five games from seven.

“I really enjoyed myself here and saved my best for last,” the 16-time Grand Slam winner said.

“It feels nice to come back. I think it was the right thing to do. I’m happy I made it a priority this year. I hope I can keep the momentum up going into Dubai, Indian Wells and Miami.”

Federer, who was playing in Rotterdam for the first time in seven years, added: “It’s incredible that it took me seven years to come back and defend my title, I hope the next time is not so long. But if it is, then it means I’ll be playing for another seven years.”

The No 10-ranked Del Potro had five break points in the second set, but failed to capitalise.

“He played much better than me today,” said the Argentine.

“I didn’t take the break points when I had them. It’s really difficult to beat Federer if you have the chances and don’t take them. He was more confident and concentrated than me in the important moments and I think that was the key.”
