Henderson waiting on Grandouet fitness

2012-02-22 06:38:28

The horse was seen as one of the favourites for the race but was forced to undergo an operation after banging his leg in his box on Thursday night.
Grandouet was set for his final Cheltenham preparation race in the Kingwell Hurdle at Wincanton on Saturday but will now miss out as he continues his recovery.
Henderson says the horse had a long-standing problem that he and his stable hands had been managing but the knock on Thursday caused it to flare up, meaning surgery was inevitable.
However, he believes Grandouet could make a quick recovery from the operation and has a definite chance of being ready for the Champion Hurdle in March.
“We had to flush out a bit of infection inside the joint, rather than outside it, and that all went well” Henderson told Sky Sports. “As a consequence he was much more comfortable this morning. He’s walking sound on it.
“He’s not as sore as he was, and as long as the infection can be controlled, we’ve still got a realistic chance.”
