Wayne Bridge could make his Sunderland debut against visiting Norwich in the Premier League on Wednesday night.
The ex-England defender, who has not played a competitive game since September, has gone straight into the match day squad following his loan switch from leaders Manchester City.
Black Cats boss Martin O’Neill is short of options at the back with injuries to Wes Brown (medial ligament), Titus Bramble (Achilles/foot) and Matt Kilgallon (ankle).
Club skipper Lee Cattermole is also doubtful with a hamstring complaint, while midfielder David Vaughan (ankle ligaments) and striker Nicklas Bendtner are still out of contention with their respective knocks.
The Canaries, meanwhile, have no fresh fitness concerns although striker James Vaughan and defender Elliott Ward have yet to reach full fitness after a spell on the sidelines.
Goalkeeper John Ruddy, Wales hitman Steve Morison and midfielders Bradley Johnson and Andrew Surman are expected to feature after being rested for an FA Cup fourth round win at West Brom’s expense.
On-loan Tottenham full-back Kyle Naughton is also eligible again.
Sunderland, recent 2-0 victors over Swansea, are 10th in the standings with 27 points - two less than Norwich, who held high-flying Chelsea to a goalless draw in their previous league outing.
