Orlando Pirates have completed another stunning transfer coup with the acquisition of world footballing veteran Luis Boa Morte, who signed an 18-month deal the with the Soweto juggernauts.
The 34-year-old has been on the books at some of England’s biggest clubs, including Arsenal, Fulham and West Ham United, although he has spent the last few weeks as a free agent after parting ways with Greek side Larissa FC.
However, the Portuguese international is now set to embark on a South African adventure with the Buccaneers, who at the beginning of the season managed to lure Bafana Bafana legend Benni McCarthy to the Orlando Stadium.
“I am happy to join Pirates,” the playmaker told the club’s official website. “This is a big club with big ambitions, and I look to make a meaningful contribution.”
Boa Morte went on to reveal some choice words from South Africa’s all-time leading goal scorer McCarthy proved pivotal in his decision to join Julio Leal’s outfit.
“Before I decided on joining the club, I had a chat with my friend Benni (McCarthy). He was instrumental in influencing my decision to come to the club,” he revealed.
He added: “I am not interested in personal goals, I am more focused on making a contribution towards the collective. Pirates are the defending champs, the immediate goal is to successfully defend the title but obviously it won’t be easy because the league is very competitive,” he concluded.
Boa Morte is set to link up with his new team-mates for training on Wednesday, although he will be ineligible for Pirates’ African Champions League campaign as the 25-man squad list has already been submitted to CAF.
