Magpies supporter in hot water

A disgruntled fan is facing charges of criminal damage after painting the words ‘St. James’ on the wall of Newcastle’s stadium.

Michael Atkinson, 29, of Hareydene, Newbiggin Hall, Newcastle, allegedly daubed the tag on the wall hours after the St James’ Park signs were taken down.

It was announced in December that the historical home of Newcastle United would have its name changed from St. James’ Park to the Sports Direct Arena, in a bid to raise funds for the club.

Atkinson, apparently one of many fans unhappy with the change, is thought to be responsible for writing the former name of the stadium in white paint, where a St.James’ sign had previously hung.

The graffiti didn’t last long, with workmen arriving on Friday morning to remove it.

Most Newcastle fans have said they will continue to refer to the ground as St. James’ Park, but fears persist that the old name will be forgotten in time.

The club says the current name is only a temporary measure, intended to “showcase” the sponsorship opportunity to “interested parties”.

Managing director Derek Llambias has suggested that the club stands to make up to £10m a year by selling the naming rights for the stadium.

Atkinson is due to appear before Newcastle Magistrates’ Court on 7 March.
