Johnny Heitinga has played most of his Everton career in the midfield but admits he’s delighted to be back in the heart of the defence.
Since his arrival from Atletico Madrid in 2009, the Dutchman has been primarily used as a defensive midfielder and at times at right back. However, an injury to Phil Jagielka opened the door for a return to the centre of defence.
It’s an opportunity that Heitinga has grabbed with both hands as Everton have conceded just 10 goals in their last 11 games. The 28-year-old admits he’s loving being back in his favoured position.
“Everybody knows centre-half is my best position and my favourite position and the one I feel most comfortable in,” he told the Liverpool Echo.
“I feel very happy. I’m happy with how things are going, but I know that I must continue to do my best in every single game I play. I will do that again on Saturday.”
The Toffees face Chelsea next up and having beaten Manchester City in late January, David Moyes’ men know that they have what it takes to claim three points against top sides. Added to this, the Blues haven’t enjoyed the best of times at Goodison Park in recent years, losing their last to games at the ground.
Heitinga reveals that the team are upbeat about their chances of securing a victory.
“We are confident at the moment, the team is confident and we are looking forward to it ,” he explained.
“In the past we have beaten them so we know we can do it.”
