Torres: subject of cheeky bid

West Ham United failed with audacious loan bids for star strikers Fernando Torres and Carlos Tevez during the January transfer window.
With Torres struggling for form and goals since joining Chelsea from Liverpool in January 2011, the Hammers thought the Blues might be tempted to farm out their £50million striker.
Co-chairman David Sullivan believes Torres would have benefitted from a spell in the Championship.
The Hammers, looking to take advantage of the Argentina international’s long-running feud with Roberto Mancini, also tried to sign Tevez, but were given short shrift on all three occasions by Manchester City.
“We tried to get Torres from Chelsea,” Sullivan told www.westhamtillidie.com. “Well if he couldn’t score in the Premier League, come along with us for a month. We might fire him up. They just said ‘not at this moment in time’.
“Three times we asked [about signing Tevez]. Three times they said ‘no chance’.”
