Blues rally behind poor Torres

2012-02-20 11:00:52

Fernando Torres’ dry spell has not gone unnoticed at Stamford Bridge, but Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas reckons everyone is still behind the goal-shy striker.

Still burdened by his hefty £50million price tag, or just plain old lost his mojo, the once free-scoring Torres has cut a pitiful figure in front of goal of late.

‘El Niño’ has only chalked up three strikes in all competitions this season with the former Liverpool ace having failed to beat an opposing goalkeeper since October.

The 27-year-old was replaced at half-time on Saturday in the Blues’ lacklustre 1-1 home draw against Birmingham in their FA Cup fifth-round tie.

But Villas-Boas insists getting the Spain international back to his lethal best and firing on all cylinders remains a firm priority at the west London club.

“Everybody is desperate for him (Torres) to score,” he said.

“Everybody pushes him, praises him in training and it will come with him getting opportunities.

“His confidence is low but we will have to continue to persist with our belief in his talent.”

Torres became the fastest player in the Reds’ history to score 50 league goals and notched up an impressive 81 strikes in total during his three-and-a-half-year stint at Anfield.
